Spiritual Communion when unable to attend Mass
In the Name of the ✠ Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
Collect
Let the Power of the Holy Spirt come upon me, O Lord, I beseech thee: that he may both mercifully cleanse my heart and defend me from all adversities. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Epistle appointed for the day, or Revelation 3:20
Behold. I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
The Gospel appointed for the day, or St. John 15:5
I am the vine, ye are the branches. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
Act of Contrition
O God, I am very sorry that I have sinned against thee who art so good. Forgive me for Jesus’ sake, and I will try to sin no more.
Act of Reception
In Union, dear Lord, with the faithful at every altar of thy Church where thy blessed Body and Blood are being offered to the Father, I desire to offer thee praise and thanksgiving. I believe that thou art truly present in the Holy Sacrament. And since I cannot now receive thee sacramentally, I beseech thee to come spiritually into my heart. I unite myself unto thee, and embrace thee with all the affections of my soul. Let me never be separated from thee. Let me live and die in thy love. Amen.
Come Lord Jesus, dwell in thy servant in the fullness of thy strength, in the perfection of thy ways, and in the holiness of thy spirit, and rule over every hostile power in the might of thy Spirit, and to the glory of the Father. Amen.
May the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve my body and Soul unto everlasting life. Amen
Act of Praise and Thanksgiving
Blessed, praised, and adored be Jesus Christ on his throne of glory in Heaven, and in the most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Amen.
Morning Prayer for Second Sunday after Epiphany, the 19th of January
One Hundred Eighteenth Psalm. Confitemini Domino.
O GIVE thanks unto the LORD, for he is gracious; * because his mercy endureth for ever.
Let Israel now confess that he is gracious, * and that his mercy endureth for ever.
Let the house of Aaron now confess, * that his mercy endureth for ever.
Yea, let them now that fear the LORD confess, * that his mercy endureth for ever.
I called upon the LORD in trouble; * and the LORD heard me at large.
The LORD is on my side; * I will not fear what man doeth unto me.
The LORD taketh my part with them that help me; * therefore shall I see my desire upon mine enemies.
It is better to trust in the LORD, * than to put any confidence in man.
It is better to trust in the LORD, * than to put any confidence in princes.
All nations compassed me round about; * but in the Name of the LORD will I destroy them.
They kept me in on every side, they kept me in, I say, on every side; * but in the Name of the LORD will I destroy them.
They came about me like bees, and are extinct even as the fire among the thorns; * for in the Name of the LORD I will destroy them.
Thou hast thrust sore at me, that I might fall; * but the LORD was my help.
The LORD is my strength, and my song; * and is become my salvation.
The voice of joy and health is in the dwellings of the righteous; * the right hand of the LORD bringeth mighty things to pass.
The right hand of the LORD hath the pre-eminence; * the right hand of the LORD bringeth mighty things to pass.
I shall not die, but live, * and declare the works of the LORD.
The LORD hath chastened and corrected me; * but he hath not given me over unto death.
Open me the gates of righteousness, * that I may go into them, and give thanks unto the LORD.
This is the gate of the LORD, * the righteous shall enter into it.
I will thank thee; for thou hast heard me, * and art become my salvation.
The same stone which the builders refused, * is become the head-stone in the comer.
This is the LORD’S doing, * and it is marvellous in our eyes.
This is the day which the LORD hath made; * we will rejoice and be glad in it.
Help me now, O LORD: * O LORD, send us now prosperity.
Blessed be he that cometh in the Name of the LORD: * we have wished you good luck, we that are of the house of the LORD.
God is the LORD, who hath showed us light: * bind the sacrifice with cords, yea, even unto the horns of the altar.
Thou art my God, and I will thank thee; * thou art my God, and I will praise thee.
O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is gracious, * and his mercy endureth for ever.
The First Lesson. Zechariah 8:1-8, 20-23
Again the word of the LORD of hosts came to me, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; I was jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I was jealous for her with great fury. Thus saith the LORD; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the LORD of hosts the holy mountain. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, and every man with his staff in his hand for very age. And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If it be marvellous in the eyes of the remnant of this people in these days, should it also be marvellous in mine eyes? saith the LORD of hosts. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will save my people from the east country, and from the west country; And I will bring them, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God, in truth and in righteousness. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come people, and the inhabitants of many cities: And the inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, Let us go speedily to pray before the LORD, and to seek the LORD of hosts: I will go also. Yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the LORD. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.
The Second Lesson. 1 Corinthians 12:12-31
For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him And if they were all one member, where were the body? But now are they many members, yet but one body. And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary: And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness. For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked: That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it. Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet show I unto you a more excellent way.
Collect, Epistle, and Gospel for the Second Sunday after Epiphany
The Collect.
ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who dost govern all things in heaven and earth; Mercifully hear the supplications of thy people, and grant us thy peace all the days of our life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Epistle. Romans xii. 6.
HAVING then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; or ministry, let us wait on our ministering; or he that teacheth, on teaching; or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not. Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate.
The Gospel. St. Mark i. 1.
THE beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; as it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins. And John was clothed with camel’s hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey; and preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him: and there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
